Notre propos est une compréhension aussi simple, claire et générique que possible - donc indépendante de toute solution particulière. Le point de départ 
Le point de départ va être une modélisation trés simple du système commun : le catenet distribué et ses composants : commutateurs, gateways, lignes, interfaces, serveurs, télémates.


L'IUI (Intelligent Use Interface) 
Le point "central" du réseau dans la perspective NETIX d'un réseau distrribué est l'"IUI".
Ceci est à bien percevoir : l'IUI fait l'interface entre la strate des services de transport de données de bout en bout, et celle de son utilisation interapplicative host to host. De façon générique la RFC 1958 portant sur l'architecture de l'internet la définit très précisément comme à la frange entre le bout du réseau :
